CUE grant recipient and 2015 Artist in Residence Timothy Yanick Hunter debuts his solo exhibition, Orange Room. The exhibition explores the gray area between consumer culture and cultural appreciation: at what point does the appreciation of artworks, artifacts, and people become a consumer past time, and when does an artist go from cultural contributor to retailer? The artist samples from the motifs of the consumer world and contemporary art; Hunter's approach is to blend these worlds seamlessly. With the Orange Room, he transforms a vacant space in Kensington Market with his orange paintings, orange walls, and even orange food. More than a show of artworks, the exhibit becomes an installation that employs its environment as a tool for conversation.The Orange Room consists of paintings, illustrations, and design all accented with what the artist calls, "colours that seduce the viewer, while questioning the role of desire in retail marketing.” Hunter aims to examine the history of white male artists painting the nude female form, and reimagines this process through the lens of a young black male artist.
